BirdWatch AI – Embedded Bird Watching Solution with TensorFlow

BirdWatch AI is an innovative project that combines a passion for bird watching with the power of artificial intelligence. Our birdhouse with automatic recognition leverages TensorFlow to offer an unprecedented birdwatching experience. The BirdWatch AI project encompasses the mechanical design of a bird feeder equipped with a Full HD camera (a 12-megapixel IMX708 sensor with HDR), with the primary aim to capture images and videos of visiting birds. Using TensorFlow's automatic recognition algorithm and image manipulation with OpenCV, BirdWatch AI accurately identifies the bird species present, providing detailed and engaging information for birdwatching enthusiasts. As an open-source project, BirdWatch AI invites developers, enthusiasts, and the curious to collaborate, make modifications, and improvements. This open and collaborative aspect of the project encourages the sharing of knowledge and skills and contributes to the growth of artificial intelligence and birdwatching. BirdWatch AI not only offers the opportunity to observe and learn more about local avian wildlife but also makes a significant impact in several areas: Environmental education and awareness: Through our project, we aim to educate the public about bird species and their ecological importance. By presenting our sighting records and relevant information about bird behaviors, we strive to promote environmental awareness and care for biodiversity. Contribution to scientific research: In collaboration with ornithologists and researchers, we share data collected via BirdWatch AI to contribute to understanding migratory habits, distribution patterns, and bird population dynamics. Our technology provides a novel approach for efficient and effective data collection. Technological innovation: BirdWatch AI represents an interesting integration of nature observation and artificial intelligence. We are proud to demonstrate how the application of TensorFlow has enabled the automatic recognition of bird species, opening new perspectives for the use of AI in wildlife conservation and observation. At Maker Faire Rome, we will present a working prototype of our birdhouse, illustrating how we use TensorFlow for automatic bird recognition. We will also display a selection of recordings that demonstrate the effectiveness of our technology. We are excited to share our project with the audience at Maker Faire Rome, inspiring others to explore the universe of birds through technological innovation.

TrueBees is a blockchain-based system able to guarantee that a given visual content shared on social media is trustworthy, in the sense that it has not been synthetically generated by AI. TrueBees provides an answer to the questions: Should I trust this image? Should I reshare/publish it? Is the identity depicted in this image a real person? For detecting possible deepfakes, TrueBees relies upon AI technology developed and fine-tuned by our top-notch researchers. On a reference dataset our system reported an accuracy of 98.05% with images shared on Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram and Twitter.

SANITRON, SANIFICATORE AUTOMATICO PER CARRELLI DELLA SPESA

Innovate is an innovative start-up operational since 2020, one of the projects created is sanitron, a device that automatically sanitizes the shopping trolleys used in supermarkets, warehouses, shopping centers and all points of sale that use trolleys to make purchases. The handles of shopping trolleys, in use at points of sale, are a real receptacle for germs and bacteria, this is because they are touched by many people every day, and are rarely cleaned, all this is ascertained by numerous scientific studies which highlight the danger. Today there are systems where the operator manually inserts the trolley inside a box, sanitizing it entirely; alternatively, we proceed through manual sanitization with disinfectant products by an operator. Sanitron is the effective solution for sanitizing trolley handles, an easy-to-apply system that will be positioned in the areas where shopping trolleys are stored in warehouses, on the separation structures of the various rows of trolleys, with height-adjustable supports. The device is composed of an external aluminum casing in which the sanitization units are contained and a panel, inside which the logic control (PLC) and all the electrical, electronic and hydraulic components are contained. The device is applied directly where each user places the trolley together with the others, having a sanitization unit for each available trolley; when the user puts the trolley away and hooks it with the chain, a sensor, through the logic control (PLC) will detect the continuous presence (for more than 20 seconds) of the trolley handle, the continuous presence and the timer serve to avoid accidentally starting a sanitization in the event of a simple passage in front of the sensor; once a continuous presence has been detected, sanitisation will be activated by spraying the disinfectant solution precisely on the handle of the trolley for approximately 3 seconds. Once sanitisation is completed, a green LED will light up to indicate that the ready-to-use trolley is disinfected , the trolley handle will also be dry in a few seconds; this procedure is repeated for each trolley available in the area and will be activated through the consent of a safety sensor, detecting that there are no people in the sanitization area, in case there is the presence of one or more people who should keeping trolleys in the area will disable the operation of the sanitization cycle (in order to avoid accidental spraying in the presence of customers and operators); This device has undergone numerous safety and durability tests with positive results, and is also close to CE marking. Customers of supermarkets and sales outlets are the protagonists of this idea, and will be very satisfied to see how one of the objects in common use most contaminated by germs and bacteria can finally be disinfected in the most effective way on the market.

EGGS

EGGS are multifunctional chairs designed to inspire creative associations and playful combinations. Children, like little chicks, play with eggs, a primordial form, a symbol of life. From the opening of the eggs comes the surprise, with many ways of use, a lot of imagination to invent and create new environments to play. The egg as a symbol of perfect shape, perceptible to all, easy to communicate and mean. In the egg there is expectation, development, birth and transformation. The colors of nature include a range of yellows for the yolk, ranging from light yellow to dark orange, almost red, while white is provided for the albumen. Obviously, with a fantastic interpretation, we can attribute to the albumen and yolk colors different from those recognizable in nature, contrasting with each other, with a beautiful impact and very bright tones. So I thought of two series: 4 or 6 eggs, coordinated and well matched in their colors. By considering the interchangeability of the yolks or their halves, you can always get new combinations. EGGS are therefore nice furnishings, which if necessary can perform the function of seating, foot rests, fun objects to play with your body, build and create attractive, original and colorful environments, .... all child-sized.

E-Horizon Project

E-Horizon Project is a project that encourages young people to be creative and take control of their future. Starting from a "Crazy Idea", the project has created a community of young motor enthusiasts with a common dream: to become part of the world of world motorsports. Through the new technologies of industry 4.0, all high school students, willing to test themselves and learn, can express their creativity and their technical knowledge, creating models of racing cars in 1:10 scale through the use of CAD software, 3D printing, microcontroller programming. Eventually they can compete with other makers, competing with the cars they create. The project includes different categories of cars to be built: - MKRS: Formula 1-style cars, electrically powered, designed and driven by school kids - Hypercar: project similar to MKRS but with cars with covered wheels - Driverless: self-driving Hypercar-style cars. At Maker Faire Rome we will bring the 2023 prototypes of the various projects plus other models we have previously made and we will hold small shows to show the capabilities of our cars and the potential of our project.

In recent times, electronic books have become more popular than physical books due to their ease of portability, searchability, and quick access to a vast number of titles. This has led to a growing preference for e-books among researchers, scientists, and students. Additionally, the creation of e-books makes it easy to preserve the physical copies of old, valuable books while still using them as much as needed. To create an e-book from a hard copy of a book, a common scanner found in libraries or universities is the desktop scanner. The book is placed under the scanner, and the pages are manually turned by the person scanning the text after each scan. However, when dealing with a large number of books, the bottleneck in the scanning process is the need to turn each page manually after each scan. To address this challenge, we have designed a system that includes a 3-bar mechanism, a stepper motor, and an Arduino board. The system is connected to the scanner and flips the pages automatically after each scan. The primary and core component of this system is the 3-link mechanism that flips every page using two actions: detaching and flipping. The stepper motor rotates and transfers the necessary torque to the connected gears, which in turn, transfers the rotational motion of the motor to the reciprocating angular motion of the detaching link. This causes the detaching link to move from the outside of the book to the middle of the target page, detaching the upper page from the others. Another link connected to the detaching link turns immediately afterward to completely flip the detached page. This system offers several advantages, including adjustability to accommodate book dimensions and the table or desk on which scanning is done. Before starting to scan, the system can be positioned and fixed according to the book's size and clamped on the table. In this way, the system can help users scan large volumes of pages quickly and efficiently without wasting time and energy turning pages manually. In conclusion, this automated scanning system is a cost-effective solution, with all the required parts readily available in the market. It can help users rapidly scan documents with minimal effort and save valuable time, especially when dealing with a high number of pages.

Heliostats are devices that reflect the sun's rays onto a fixed target. They use motorized reflecting surfaces that automatically follow the trajectory of the Sun. Today they are used only in large plants for the production of electricity with reflecting surfaces of hundreds of square meters and millionaire investments (such as the Archimede thermodynamic plant by Carlo Rubbia). But we think that a heliostat can also be used for other purposes, such as: lighting environments where the sun does not reach, cooking food, water pasteurization, etc. and without the need to use any type of energy other than solar radiation. We have therefore studied and created a simple, cheap and easy to use heliostat. The study and creation of the first prototypes required several years and involved considerable economic resources. A medium-sized coffee roasting plant (30 kg/hour) was also built. The plant, the Hw/Sw projects, the patents, the prototypes, were brought by the partners supplied to the new Start Up Digitarch Farm which will develop the production and commercial process using the already registered PuroSole brand.
