SPOCH – Smart Protection of Cultural Heritage

MICRO4BIO: le biotecnologie microbiche per un futuro sostenibile.

The MICRO4BIO project aims to promote the direct impact of biotechnology on people's lives, representing an element of great interest, not only scientific but also social, on which to insert wide-ranging and deeply topical dissemination and cultural actions. In MICRO4BIO team there are representatives of the Italian Biotechnologists Association, researchers from the University of Bari and young startuppers who promote the culture of sustainability through microbial biotechnologies that exploit microorganisms to develop new processes and new products by a circular bioeconomy approach.

Isola Ecologica

"Isola Ecologica" was conceived with the purpose of entertaining children whilst also contributing toward memory development and awareness regarding a very important contemporary theme. The game will consist of 1 board divided into 4 different environments (Beach, City, Park and Countryside), tiles depicting waste, 1 dice and the "Recycling Plant" which will have a digital reader inside to recognize the tiles, and some motorized hatches that represent the waste disposal bins. Each turn, a given player will collect 1 card from the environment rolled by the dice, place it on the reader, and then press the key corresponding to the correct bin, if the guess was right the LEDs will light up green and the trapdoor will open, otherwise the tile will have to be placed back on the board.

ReMade Community Lab_from waste to resource

The intent is to generate micro-production activities starting from urban plastic waste using low-complexity recycling techniques and production through digital fabrication. ReMade products are conceived starting from the selection and reinterpretation of the signs of the territory and through co-design processes, to contribute to the construction of new positive identities and to the activation of relationships in the proximity system of the Sanità district of Naples.
TrueBees

TrueBees is a blockchain-based system able to guarantee that a given visual content shared on social media is trustworthy, in the sense that it has not been synthetically generated by AI.
TrueBees provides an answer to the questions: Should I trust this image? Should I reshare/publish it? Is the identity depicted in this image a real person?
For detecting possible deepfakes, TrueBees relies upon AI technology developed and fine-tuned by our top-notch researchers. On a reference dataset our system reported an accuracy of 98.05% with images shared on Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram and Twitter.
Immersive Cube Experience

The "Immersive Cube" is a three-dimensional environment that offers an immersive experience by projecting content, images and videos onto all the inner surfaces of the cube. In addition, it will be possible to further immerse oneself in virtual reality by using VR and AR headset, allowing the user to interact with objects and digital spaces.
In detail, the experience will be divided into three different use cases:
- TEA Research lab, which will allow the user to learn about genome editing projects for stronger, climate-resilient plants
- Malteria Brewery Virtual Tour, where the user will be able to explore the secrets of the malt house, interact with themed objects and discover the traceability function of the beer in bottle
- Sensorial Tour; here, users will be able to test themselves, trying to associate the right type of oil with the aroma perceived inside the Cube.
What the three experiences have in common is a new way of conveying information and learning notions that are often complex (such as neuroscience or genome editing) or difficult to physically reach (such as visiting a malt house). This allows the public to learn more about the products they are going to buy, and be more aware of new scientific discoveries useful in underlining concepts such as made in Italy, food sovereignty and sustainability.

BeSight

Our project’s aim is to build a device that makes it possible for blind people to improve their sensory abilities by using a low latency wearable device that brings back an immediate feedback to the person that’s wearing it, bearing information of surrounding objects.
What’s new with the device we intend to build is the fact that it will provide real time indications not only of the distance of the surrounding objects, but also of the angle (azimuth) by comparing it with a direction reference (the person’s sight line).
We mean to achieve this by using a rotating LIDAR sensor connected to a programmable interface which generates signals (vibrations) based on the position in which the person is located.

LIGNOPACK – Bioplastic from food waste for food packaging

Every year in the field of food packaging synthetic additives are used for the development of plastic packaging, whose deleterious impact they have on the marine ecosystem and on human health is now known.
LIGNOPACK is proposed as a natural alternative to the current toxic additives being composed of natural substances: lignin and chitosan. The union of these two biopolymers as nanoparticles has allowed the development of a completely natural additive that can be used in food packaging, with great advantages in terms of sustainability, performance and cost-effectiveness.

Foods of the future: between biodiversity, circular economy and agritech:
An accurate nutritional regimen stands as a pivotal health determinant among all life-ages.
Within this context, promoting nutritional biodiversity and foods capable of guaranteeing both productivity and high nutritional value as well as in the context of climate change, represent one of the main challenges of our millennium.
Environmental sustainability and waste reduction in the food supply chain are issues consumers are becoming increasingly sensitive to. For years UCBM has been working on those subjects, in particular:
i) Identifying better resistant crop varieties to adverse environmental conditions or varieties with peculiar nutritional characteristics.
ii) Refining green methods to extract bioactive molecules with high-added value for their potential employment in nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, etc., from secondary raw materials that so far only assumed a low or negative economic value within the supply chain
iii) Developing sensor-based and robotic systems to identify the health status of the plant to allow an intervention of greater precision in the various agricultural processes, to optimize the production and the harvesting of the edible parts.
At the Maker Faire, some projects, and experimental tools by the research groups in Food and Nutrition Science will be exposed, biomedical measurements and instruments and advanced robotics.

"I DO IT" is an all-in-one application that integrates several advanced features in order to make tourism more inclusive for everyone. Thanks to the use of mixed reality, users can virtually explore and visit hotels, discovering every detail without having to physically move from their location. NFC tags allow guests to easily access to detailed information about the hotel, improving the user experience.
The app also offers audio-description services for the blind, allowing them to fully enjoy the attractions without audio-visual barriers. In addition, thanks to the Italian Sign Languageinterpreter, our deaf users can easily communicate and interact during their travels.
To ensure accessibility for visually impaired people, SMARTUX has developed a tactile book in Braille. This tool contains a detailed map of the city, a floor plan of the hotel room and a wide representation of the hotel itself. Using the NFC connection, users can access the audio description and the ISL interpreter directly from the book, allowing complete inclusion and making it easier to plan their trips.
