Faire: Rome

Maker: Politecnico di Torino

The Politecnico di Torino presents the most important students Teams involved in sustainability, ecological aspect, low consumption, mobility, recycle, reducing environmental impact and promoting circular economy. The Politecnico of Torino involves the students in Teams with a mission: “learning by doing” with the goal to grow up a new generation of engineers able to accept challenges and solve problems. The main goal of the teams is a practical training of the future engineer: to design means to compromise between an idea and what is actually buildable. The Politecnico would like to present 10 teams that from 15 years make innovation participating to international competitions and events. The Politecnico would like to have a big space to expose theire prototype; cars, bicycle, motorcycle, boats, mobile robot, scaled airplane, recycling computer and more other.

Hi Sound Compact – l’audio perfetto per i tuoi video

Faire: Rome

Maker: Dodotronic di Ivano Pelicella

There are a lot of wildlife photographers and videographers, all of whom had extremely costly equipment and lenses, but none of them could match a suitable microphone. Shotgun microphones are designed to be extremely directional in order to block out sound coming from the sides; however, they do not perform as well as parabolic microphones in terms of amplification and background noise. Each naturalist recorder carries their own recorder and a parabola in opposite hands. There will be too much equipment to carry while making a movie, and managing a big parabola is typically difficult. The goal was to design something that would free up your hands so that you could concentrate and begin your film. Hi-Sound Compact aims to record the inaudible sounds of animals in stunning quality and with little noise.

Making fun with symmetries

Faire: Rome

Maker: Alessandro Stroppa

The activities were designed for primary school students in order to get insights into geometrical concepts by exploiting simple arguments and specific games dealing with symmetries. In particular, “dynamical models”, softwares, and mirrors were employed. During the event, concepts have been progressively explained through the manipulation of materials, observation and subsequent mental and verbal reworking. Complex concepts like phase transitions or symmetry breaking phenomena in material science are explained using geometric figures. Connections between symmetries and geometrical properties of a figure are explained, in parallel to examples in material science, in a perspective of a multidsciplinary project.

Brailly

Faire: Rome

Maker: Katerina Koleva

We introduce Brailly, an interactive cube made for visually impaired people of every age, who would like to learn Braille in a fun way. Brailly is a 3D printed cube that consists of a speaker with an audio guide for learning simple words and letters in Braille. Learning Braille happens through a set of individual or collaborative exercises. Users can learn how to “write” in Braille by clicking on buttons, which imitate the Braille alphabet. Learning how to “read” the letters happens through haptic dowels. Our first prototype consists of 3D-printed inside parts made from PLA and an outside shell made from TPU95 material which makes the cube safe for kids. Other important components are six buttons allowing for Braille input and six servo motors which are responsible for the Braille output. During Makers faire we would also like to present our new prototype which has significant improvements such as different motors, smaller size, better sound and quality.
