Bodynodes

Faire: Rome

Maker: Manuel Bottini

Bodynodes is a motion capture project made by a hobbyist for other hobbyists. Sensors can be worn and track the movement of the body. Then, the information can be used for different types of applications. The most typical application is to control a character in a virtual reality game. Bodynodes makes the game more immersive than other systems because the sensors are worn and the player interacts directly with the new world. With the use of a VR headset or a VR cardboard, the player gets a fully immersive experience in the game. The tracking information can also be used to create animations for videos or new games. Instead of going through days of animations, the animator can just track their own body and then work on the data collected using the Bodynodes sensors. In the future, we will explore controlling drones and robots, transitioning from the virtual world to controlling the real world!

BirdWatch AI – Embedded Bird Watching Solution with TensorFlow

Faire: Rome

Maker: Enrico Stulin

BirdWatch AI is an innovative project that combines a passion for bird watching with the power of artificial intelligence. Our birdhouse with automatic recognition leverages TensorFlow to offer an unprecedented birdwatching experience. The BirdWatch AI project encompasses the mechanical design of a bird feeder equipped with a Full HD camera (a 12-megapixel IMX708 sensor with HDR), with the primary aim to capture images and videos of visiting birds. Using TensorFlow's automatic recognition algorithm and image manipulation with OpenCV, BirdWatch AI accurately identifies the bird species present, providing detailed and engaging information for birdwatching enthusiasts. As an open-source project, BirdWatch AI invites developers, enthusiasts, and the curious to collaborate, make modifications, and improvements. This open and collaborative aspect of the project encourages the sharing of knowledge and skills and contributes to the growth of artificial intelligence and birdwatching. BirdWatch AI not only offers the opportunity to observe and learn more about local avian wildlife but also makes a significant impact in several areas: Environmental education and awareness: Through our project, we aim to educate the public about bird species and their ecological importance. By presenting our sighting records and relevant information about bird behaviors, we strive to promote environmental awareness and care for biodiversity. Contribution to scientific research: In collaboration with ornithologists and researchers, we share data collected via BirdWatch AI to contribute to understanding migratory habits, distribution patterns, and bird population dynamics. Our technology provides a novel approach for efficient and effective data collection. Technological innovation: BirdWatch AI represents an interesting integration of nature observation and artificial intelligence. We are proud to demonstrate how the application of TensorFlow has enabled the automatic recognition of bird species, opening new perspectives for the use of AI in wildlife conservation and observation. At Maker Faire Rome, we will present a working prototype of our birdhouse, illustrating how we use TensorFlow for automatic bird recognition. We will also display a selection of recordings that demonstrate the effectiveness of our technology. We are excited to share our project with the audience at Maker Faire Rome, inspiring others to explore the universe of birds through technological innovation.

Ternary Computer System

Faire: Rome

Maker: Claudio La Rosa

We design a new type of microprocessor, which works with ternary logic (instead of the usual binary). The immediate benefits of the ternary are: Compact information much better (than binary system); It reduces the size of the chips (especially the memory, which today occupies most of the surface). Our idea offers technological advantages that enable a great leap forward in traditional processing and supercomputing. It is optimally applied to the emerging fields of artificial intelligence and the brain-machine connection. Some neurobiological research groups are implementing neural networks with modeling of neurons using three states, because this better matches the activity of neurons. We design, write specifications (ISA) and implement ternary microprocessors.

CORTEX AUTOMATIONS

Faire: Rome

Maker: luca cortelli

Cortex is the universal controller for CNC machines or industrial automation. It is equipped with the GRBL HALL firmware, a well-known open-source firmware that allows for the control of such machinery, and a customizable and expandable user interface. The controller has been designed to meet the needs of both the industrial sector and makers, ensuring the right level of safety and ease of assembly, thanks to its RJ45 connectors that simplify and speed up wiring, reducing connection errors. In this way, even those without specific knowledge in electronics or informatics can use it easily and intuitively, making work even more manageable. The main goal of the project is to create a community that can develop the CNC technologies, a sector that has been somewhat neglected compared to that of 3D printers, despite its importance in the industrial field. Cortex offers makers and industry professionals the necessary tools to develop and improve their own projects. Its flexibility and versatility make it suitable for various applications in which the control of motors, sensors, and actuators is necessary, in addition to its use on CNC machines.
