Immersive Cube Experience

Faire: Rome

Maker: EY

The "Immersive Cube" is a three-dimensional environment that offers an immersive experience by projecting content, images and videos onto all the inner surfaces of the cube. In addition, it will be possible to further immerse oneself in virtual reality by using VR and AR headset, allowing the user to interact with objects and digital spaces. In detail, the experience will be divided into three different use cases: - TEA Research lab, which will allow the user to learn about genome editing projects for stronger, climate-resilient plants - Malteria Brewery Virtual Tour, where the user will be able to explore the secrets of the malt house, interact with themed objects and discover the traceability function of the beer in bottle - Sensorial Tour; here, users will be able to test themselves, trying to associate the right type of oil with the aroma perceived inside the Cube. What the three experiences have in common is a new way of conveying information and learning notions that are often complex (such as neuroscience or genome editing) or difficult to physically reach (such as visiting a malt house). This allows the public to learn more about the products they are going to buy, and be more aware of new scientific discoveries useful in underlining concepts such as made in Italy, food sovereignty and sustainability.

Innovative buoyancy elements for snorkeling, scuba diving and deep sea applications

Faire: Rome

Maker: Rainer Kuth

Problem: During scuba diving and other deep sea / underwater applications common tools like lamps, cameras, knifes, fins, masks, etc. sink fast when accidentally lost, because their density is higher than water. Sportive divers with deep-licenses can dive up to 40m for a short time and tech divers for app. 100m after complex preparation of highly sophisticated equipment and training. Loss of tools is frequent, expensive and dangerous, because sea is deeper than that at most places. Challenge: Manufacturing buoyancy elements + with a density significantly less than water + while these shall withstand high hydraulic pressure + while the buoyancy force should be exactly defined and independent of depth is not trivial. Solution: 3d printing / additive manufacturing using special parameters upon printing and optionally with hybrid processes support making buoyancy elements with individual shape and buoyancy force. With such e.g. a loss of a mask with individual glasses for 1000€ is avoided: the mask will slowly rise to the water surface for save and easy recovery. Making such buoyancy elements is possible with a 3d printer for less than 500€, a free 3d construction software and a free slicing software using special parameters. Contribution: I will show on the booth: + Free design software for buoyancy elements + Free slicing software +

Syntesi – Semantic Summarization

Faire: Rome

Maker: Babelscape

Syntesi is an advanced summarization solution based on semantic understanding, designed specifically for the newspaper industry. This system not only recognizes and semanticizes the main concepts of an article, but goes further by identifying named entities, deciphering the emotions inherently expressed in the text (such as joy, anger, and admiration), categorizing the content according to specific domains (e.g., sports, politics, entertainment), and detecting the tone of the language (whether it is offensive, vulgar, etc.). In addition, the system generates a summary with the key content of the article. The end result is an incisive and multifaceted summary that captures the essence of the original article in its various facets. At Maker Faire we will present an interactive demonstration of Syntesi in action on various newspaper articles. Our goal is to highlight how semantic analysis can serve as an important tool for the newspaper industry.

Brailly

Faire: Rome

Maker: Katerina Koleva

We introduce Brailly, an interactive cube made for visually impaired people of every age, who would like to learn Braille in a fun way. Brailly is a 3D printed cube that consists of a speaker with an audio guide for learning simple words and letters in Braille. Learning Braille happens through a set of individual or collaborative exercises. Users can learn how to “write” in Braille by clicking on buttons, which imitate the Braille alphabet. Learning how to “read” the letters happens through haptic dowels. Our first prototype consists of 3D-printed inside parts made from PLA and an outside shell made from TPU95 material which makes the cube safe for kids. Other important components are six buttons allowing for Braille input and six servo motors which are responsible for the Braille output. During Makers faire we would also like to present our new prototype which has significant improvements such as different motors, smaller size, better sound and quality.

PuroSole Sistemi Solari a radiazione diretta

Faire: Rome

Maker: Digitarch Farm srl

Heliostats are devices that reflect the sun's rays onto a fixed target. They use motorized reflecting surfaces that automatically follow the trajectory of the Sun. Today they are used only in large plants for the production of electricity with reflecting surfaces of hundreds of square meters and millionaire investments (such as the Archimede thermodynamic plant by Carlo Rubbia). But we think that a heliostat can also be used for other purposes, such as: lighting environments where the sun does not reach, cooking food, water pasteurization, etc. and without the need to use any type of energy other than solar radiation. We have therefore studied and created a simple, cheap and easy to use heliostat. The study and creation of the first prototypes required several years and involved considerable economic resources. A medium-sized coffee roasting plant (30 kg/hour) was also built. The plant, the Hw/Sw projects, the patents, the prototypes, were brought by the partners supplied to the new Start Up Digitarch Farm which will develop the production and commercial process using the already registered PuroSole brand.

CORTEX AUTOMATIONS

Faire: Rome

Maker: luca cortelli

Cortex is the universal controller for CNC machines or industrial automation. It is equipped with the GRBL HALL firmware, a well-known open-source firmware that allows for the control of such machinery, and a customizable and expandable user interface. The controller has been designed to meet the needs of both the industrial sector and makers, ensuring the right level of safety and ease of assembly, thanks to its RJ45 connectors that simplify and speed up wiring, reducing connection errors. In this way, even those without specific knowledge in electronics or informatics can use it easily and intuitively, making work even more manageable. The main goal of the project is to create a community that can develop the CNC technologies, a sector that has been somewhat neglected compared to that of 3D printers, despite its importance in the industrial field. Cortex offers makers and industry professionals the necessary tools to develop and improve their own projects. Its flexibility and versatility make it suitable for various applications in which the control of motors, sensors, and actuators is necessary, in addition to its use on CNC machines.

One Health Lab

Faire: Rome

Maker: Università di Siena

The bioeconomy is not only the set of activities of food, bio-energy, and bio-materials production, but includes all activities that transform biological resources into other products. In many cases, as in the forestry sector and in many areas of biomaterial production activities, no processes are involved biotechnological but biophysical or biochemical, which makes the technical and scientific skills of the Laboratory absolutely suited to this time of crucial transition, accepting the challenge of integrating the bioeconomy and the circular economy into a new concept known as the circular bioeconomy. The Demonstrator to be implemented by the Macronode@UNISI ensures the marriage of innovation (generation of know- how), quality and sustainability in a multidisciplinary and multiproduct vision (use of know-how) proposing and using green and bio-based solutions: a model that aims at real circularity, a unicum in the eco-sustainable life sciences sector nationally and internationally. The experimental laboratory will be organized as a Bioeconomy Innovation Lab with the aim of creating a platform for the development of products derived from a waste, capable of making the process of formulating a new product and put it on the market, connecting the raw material and subcontractor industries, as well as offering the ability to carry out quality control testing, stability, material studies and realization of product prototypes.
